EVENTS
Easter Week
Traditions
In the course of Easter Week in Sulmona you can breathe
a very touching atmosphere. On Good Friday evening
you can follow the moving Good Friday solemn procession;
at Easter morning you can feel the joyful hope represented
in “Madonna che Scappa in Piazza” event.
These are centuries-old traditions, dating from ancient
pagan usages: they were propitiatory rites to gain
a fruitful crop.
GIOSTA CAVALLERESCA
Since Swabian times, in Sulmona, an ancient Joust
took place twice along the year, until the second
half of Seventeenth Century.
An historical reenactment takes place nowadays at
the end of July every year, undergoing changes as
regards the sanguinary cruelty of the Middle Ages.
It is set in the beautiful scenery of Piazza Garibaldi.
